CST-462S Week 1

 This was our first week in CST-462S - Race, Gender, & Class in the Digital World.

Service Learning Project

The largest portion of this course is going to be the Service Learning Project. In this project we will be doing 25+ hours of voluneering for one website from a list of available ones. The available websites and projects range from helping high school students with a project, to helping develop on open-source software.

For my service learning project I will be doing QA and bug testing for LibreOffice, which is an open-source alternative to applications like Microsoft Office. Outside of bug testing my own code I have no experience with QA. I am both excited and nervous for this project. It will be challenging, but I think it will be valuable, hands-on experience.

I am set to meet with our LibreOffice representative this upcoming week to plan out my service learning project, and I will be starting it the following week.

Research Topic Groups

Another major portion of this course will be our research papers. I have already made a group with some of the other students that will be working on LibreOffice. We have yet to decide on our topic, but we are hoping to do something related to open-source software.

ACM Code of Ethics

This week, as part of a discussion board, we read the ACM Code of Ethics, which outlines moral and ethical goals that computer scientists should aim to uphold to help improve the world and ensure that technology benefits everyone.

IEEE Code of Ethics

Also as part of a discussion board, we read the IEEE Code of Ethics. Similar to the ACM Code of Ethics, these codes outline moral and ethical goals that computer scientists should uphold to ensure that technology helps, not harms, humanity.

Artificial Intelligence Market (2026-2033)

Also as part of a discussion board, I read the article Artificial Intelligence Market (2026-2033), which discusses current trends in AI and attempts to predict the AI market over the next several years.

Week 12

CST 338 - Week 4 This week was the fourth week is CST 338, also known as Software Engineering. In this week we began to learn about android development. Project 1 Review This week we finished a large project in CST 338. We have been asked to work with one or more classmates, and answer some questions about the project. With whom did you work? I worked with Nasser. What was your strategy for solving the assignments? My strategy was to read all of the method descriptions before I wrote any code. As I read them I created method stubs, and detailed TODO comments for each method. Afterwards, I started writing the methods from top to bottom in the assignment prompt. If a method called another method that I had not written yet, I would go ahead and write that method first so I better understood how they interacted.  CST-363: Week 3 This is the third week of CST-363, also known as Intro. to Databases. Questions What is an SQL view.  How is it similar to a table? In what ways is it different? An SQL View stores a SELECT statement for later use, allowing the statement to be easily accessed in the future. A View functions similarly to a table, because SELECT statements return tables. However, the values that a View shows aren't being stored in the View, but the actual tables. This means that when one of those tables is updated, the View has to be as well. This also means that one needs to be very careful with updating or deleting rows using the View. Take a minute to think about how SQL compares to other programming languages like Java.
